Also thought of adding a third forward gutter mounted roof bar, as the rail mounted bars aren't that far forward. That would help shift it forward some.

I've got rails on the wagon and the racks are at the furthest away points already. I'll wait for the reply and then look at a nudge bar setup.laneends wrote:Also thought of adding a third forward gutter mounted roof bar, as the rail mounted bars aren't that far forward. Thanks for the offer Shane, I'll see how I go.shane wrote: I think I still have one somewhere from hangliding days. You're welcome to it but they're simple to make and can be custom made to fit without a nudge bar.

I would suggest do the bar coming off the front if you can, was fairly simple to make and if you have an old trampoline lying around its fairly cost effective too.
If you can't do the h bar another idea is this The black lines are the roofracks... Bolt on aluminium fence post from bunnings (2.1m for $28, also weighs only 2kg) bolt to the roofracks, then attach pieces at the ends for the yak to be supported on.
This drawing was my idea for two yaks so sorta disregard the cuttings list.

If you have rail mounted bars and extend the yak too far forward without a t bar/nudge bar support, The front rail will keep popping the roof panel under braking, or bumps. That happens to me if I push the adventure too far forward or load up two yaks

Have about a metre overhang on my PA on my ute, always tie off a fluro something to the back of the PA(jacket or vest) and had highway patrol follow me up the South Gippy but never been done. I wouldn't fret about it too much !

I think this is another key reason to apply for changes to the rules. With no overhang allowed at all it forces us to try and come up with new ideas. Its just a matter of time before someone, who has put in all the effort to make something to comply with these rediculous rules, has their homemade contraption fall apart on the freeway - and then instead of saying 'well we could have avoided this by changing the overhang rules' vicroads will be unreasonable and ban roofracked skis all together.Kingo wrote:Be careful if you go down the homemade/custom fabricated front rack route, they can make your airbags spontaneously go off
Eoin I completely agree with the letter you wrote and hope that it can get a result. Atm I always have overhang at the back (with a hi-vis flag) as it is a toss up between looking after my $1300 ski or coping a $400 fine *sigh*
