Storing a yak for an extended period.
Further to the topic of travelling in extreme heat, as many of you know we are heading off for a couple of years, The AI will be stored on top of the rest of the household goods in a shipping container with little or no shade. Anyone got any advice for us there?

Shipping containers get really hot when locked up, i used to cut elongated holes at the bottom on one sid and end the the top on opposite sides for airflow this helps considerably but not so well on still days. I think i would be asking a friend to store atleast the hull on pipes under cover or something to that affect.
If i had the room i would but i don't sorry

I would store it flat on its bottom and fully supported along its whole length, covered with no weight on it. If it gets really hot in the container any unsupported sections could droop to the point of damage. I'd also look into improving the ventilation in the container.

Considering you will be away for a number of years..... Wouldn't be best in financial point of viewto sell the AI now, and buy another one when return?
Consider the fact that while you be away, it will depreciates in value.... And in storage, risk of damage due to long term storage, or worse stolen wheile you are away. So best just sell it and get one when you return

Sounds easy but when you work out that we will have no income for the next couple of years + we are of the generation that have not had compulsory super for most of our working lives + we will have nothing left but the pension when we return the price of a new AI aint gonna be in the budget.CrazyChenski wrote:Considering you will be away for a number of years..... You need to balance that against the risk of a melted kayak. The unknown is never easy. You need to do some research. Here's a bit to get you started.spider25160 wrote: Sounds easy but when you work out that we will have no income for the next couple of years + we are of the generation that have not had compulsory super for most of our working lives + we will have nothing left but the pension when we return the price of a new AI aint gonna be in the budget.
Wine is shipped in special containers. Below an extract from a report.
70C maximum! This would vary depending on container type and whether it is stored in the sun or has another container on top, etc.In 2006, Food Science Australia simulated the temperature profiles of
seven days of shipment, including one day at sea, for four container
shipments from Adelaide to Cartagena, to test the performance of liners
produced by Ospack Systems (Smale and Eddy, 2006). The simulation
included outside temperature as well as solar radiation. The results
showed that Ospack liners reduced the peak wine temperature
(temperature inside the top row wine boxes) from 45°C to 35°C when
compared to the container with no liners. In another trial, Ospack
Systems and the Fosters Group filled six containers with wine and
temperature loggers and sent these from Adelaide to the Napa Valley in
California (Ospack, 2007). The data showed that solar radiation caused
the roof temperature in unsheltered containers stored on land to reach
70°C. On the other hand, the temperature for the centre box of the
exposed container with Ospack liner stayed below 30°C while the
temperature above the liner exceeded 50°C.

If your plastic is stored below the roof in an unshaded container it will face direct radiated heat from the roof. What may be the effect of that?
You can possibly find a melting temperature for HDPE on the web but the concern is when it starts to slump. That may vary with different grades. Contact Hobie and ask at what temperature the plastic starts to slump.
