Should I give Altona a go...

Should I give Altona a go...

Post by Pinoyatoz »

Is it safe for a newbie kayak fisho to venture out to Altona this Saturday 07/12/2019 early morning around 6:00am?
Weather Forecast - Cloudy, no rain, 15 to 25 km/h WSW wind.
Thanks everyone...

Personally I would say no.

Straight Southerly, you will want to keep below 8knots and any Westy component, I would say below 12knots.

Dont forget, the "forecast" could be a couple of knots plus or minus as a minimum.
Tuna 20.5kg ---KingFish 90cm --- Snapper 84cm --- Gummy 83cm (55cm legal) ---- Whiting 40cm --- Silver Trevelly 41cm --- Flathead 52cm --- Aussie Salmon 38cm --- Squid 34cm hood

I would have to agree with nath with a southerly at this strength will be pretty uncomfortable for you getting use to your equipment will have quite a bit of chop on the water. Sunday’s forecast is much more favourable.

Hi Manny,
Fish Ranger is forecasting 10 - 15 knots which is more than the wind speed in kph (and the gusts can be a lot more). You would certainly be better over near Apex than at Millers Road in a WSW, but you won't have a lot of water if launching there.
Sunday looks a lot better

Too early to call, if it ends up being a westerly it will be fine if southerly and it blows harder then no. If you are not coming to far and willing to pull then pin early if it turns bad, then see how the forecast is on sat morning.

Might be good conditions for some swimming lessons on the surfski with modest onshore bumps. Worst thing happens end up on the beach

I'll be out in the area early Saturday but I'll be sailing in the AI towards P2. Early morning would generally be OK in close if it stays westerly. Once it turns SW-S later and strengthens it will get very uncomfortable in the Compass. Sunday is a much better forecast for Altona if you can head out then.

Thank you all so much for your advise... very much appreciated.

I don't think I'm game enough to even attempt to go near 'the stick' on my own at this stage. Having said that, I'm aiming to do offshore fishing next summer maybe on a Stealth. :) Surely, with the assistance of the good people in here... it will happen. Aiming NSC21! ;)

If your aiming at offshore i suggest if a trip to the torquay FADS is arranged anytime this season jump at the chance as it's gotta be the best place to learn with a relatively safe launch and certainly one of the nicest places to fish, it was my first offshore launch after only a few months in the yak, it was suggested i come along by by the guys who were going and im so glad i did  as for going in your compass anyone who owns a hobie will tell you it's quite adequate for this launch.

If a newbie is not certain about going to the stick at Altona then Torquay FADS at this time wouldn't recommend.

The millers road ramp is now open and there is some good spots for squid, flathead, whiting, pinkies. I was their Wednesday night and got no snapper but the couple whiting I got were 40cm. Squid are in close as well.

Sunday is looking much better.
