Added another video exploring the difference between PFD types.

And before anyone comments, as per the disclaimer, I DID NOT buy the PFD from SLH. SLH do not sell that brand. I bought it from a non kayaking distributor before I started kayaking. It is just an old sticker and in hindsight I probably should have taken it off, but that is not the point of the video.

Well past the edge, almost at the point of no return.

KFU interviews Garath Johnson, the head of Recreational Boating Safety, Maritime Safety Victoria. Gareth talks about his own kayaking experiences, he also talks about kayak PFD's, safety equipment, lights, clothing & electrical power for kayaks. As a seasoned kayaker, Gareth sees first hand what happens when kayaking on the bays and is in a great position to help create a safer environment on the water for all of us, through education and regulations.

Thanks Pete, for that excellent interview. It's great to have someone as knowledgeable and experienced representing our interests, and being aware of the potential dangers we face, both from the environment and also from other craft.
Extremely valuable information to newcomers, but also some useful reminders for the more experienced.
I have to say that I've certainly become much more aware recently, of the potential dangers of separation from the yak. I now always tether myself to the yak in fast tidal flow areas like Balnarring & Somers.
Perhaps as well as regularly practicing our re-entry, we should see how fast we can swim dressed in our winter wet suits, dry suits, thermals & a PFD.

Good point about push button phone, doesnt take much for a touch phone to be hard/ impossible to operate when falling in.

The point about having a paddle leash tether as you will be holding paddle in hand when you fall in is more valid for surf skis and sea kayaks, but not fishos who often do not have paddle in hand when they tip over. Leashing to a surfski is essential as they will blow away if you so much as fart in their direction, made worse be less to grab hold of.leashing to kayaks at anchor in high tide flows at least is a good idea..

these videos are great Pete, would be good to see them have a home so as they are easy accessible by everyone
the self tether idea although a good one, has been on my mind for some time, as mentioned by Gareth entanglement can/could be an issue, after my spill in Portland I was tangled in some of my fishing line which proved to be difficult to remove it was caught in catch points on the back of my PFD :wtf: anyway I now have an extra fishing knife attached to my PFD.
