Rolled the yak for the first time
Well I guess it had to happen some time. Its a case of "when" not "if". I was paddling across the Queenscliff cut last tuesday from the yacht club area past the big red mooring buoys on a ripping flood tide and thought I would clear the buoys easily. Ha big mistake --- at the last second a pressure wave wacked me into the buoy and over I went in an instant. It was a very big lesson for me as I had got a bit casual and not tied everything down as I was only going 100 meters to the ramp. The good thing was that having read everthing I could find about righting and getting back into the yak on the this site, all went very well until the tide tried to force me under the low section of the bridge (about a 30cm gap). After paddling like crazy for 50 meters I got free if not a little shaken and it was then that I realised that my tackle box and 3 rods and reels were missing but everything that had a lanyard was still attached although some were dragging along behind me in the water including my anchor. Anyway I got back to the ramp and home and collected my dive gear and then spent about an hour swimming around until I luckily found in about 20 ft of water the two best rods and my tackle box on the bottom so it all ended well but it could have been a very different ending. Embarrassing? you bet but I have learnt a lot from it and know that if you follow the advice and don't panic you get through it. And yes everything is now tied down or secured. The next time you guys are holding a fall out and get in practice day I will be there. The only thing I have to do now is remove all of the upside down kayak photos around the office ---Ha very funny.
