I was running the dogs this morning when I came across this.
What can I say, if they can't see a bloody big rock - what hope have we in a kayak.
I am assuming this happened over night. Bird Rock is exposed 99% of the time, and even when it is covered by water, it is only covered by a few inches of water. The birds still sit on it at high tide. Last night was a bright moonlit night. Unless the bay is absolutely dead flat, the slightest waves will break on it.
So the question needs to be asked, why wasn't he keeping a good lookout? If the rock was covered and he was driving in an area he didn't know - why was he driving so close to shore in the dark and at such a speed, given how far he got onto the rock, he wasn't going slowly.

Just heard from a reliable source that this is an application to the Place Names Committee to rename it ‘Boatrock’

Always the chance someone flogged it and put it there deliberately. But still the swim to shore...or an accomplice in another boat.
