Prowler 13 mast and sail setup

Post by paddlepop »

Well ...after a few nights of maniacal ravings I have some images to show what I've been up to. its a bit like my uni days - do nothing for an awfully long time , sitting, watching, pondering, thinking - then at the last minute BANG put something to together!
So although I have been relatively quiet - its been many months to achieve.

pictures say a thousand words so I'll let them speak !

Sea trials soooon!!! :yahoo: :yahoo:

cheers
nick

PS.. uploading another vid with still in showing construction..

Who Let da Dogs out!
Great work Nick, very flashy, like the way it pops up
When are you taking it to the water?
Can you still paddle with it up?
Keep us all posted, GPS a speed and some approx wind speeds if posible.
I just got my first GPS, haven't tested my sail yet
but a casual Turbo peddle mirage drive on the hobie gives me 4kph and a bit of omff gives me 7-8kph.
I'll be interested what I get peddle aided and no peddle aided.

I noticed the base of the mast slides forward?????
There is obvious more than on Sly dog in that back yard??   what's going on there??

More video footage but with a series of stills showing construction.
the idea behind the sliding mast foot is
a) it allows the mast to tension the side stay automatically
b) it takes the mast towards the front so it then lays more to the side of the hull when folded
c)using a rigid or fixed front stay means theres no need for a back stay
d) no back stay means the sail can be brought down closer to the deck keeping the centre of force lower

The deck mounted section is held on with just 4 bolts and takes less than a minute to setup. It folds flat for transport.
I'm going on the principle that when under sail power I won't need to paddle or refuse to ! I don't much point in a sail if I still have to work ! Want to troll so hands need to be free.

Very impressive! I do like the sliding mast concept...very nifty indeed. Uh Oh! I think I feel another mod coming on!!! Okay, maybe later when I've actually done a bit more testing :-) I wish you luck on the upcoming maiden voyage Nick.

That’s pretty smart work, looks solid. A sail is definitely one way to turn lemons into lemonade. Love the way it packs away to the side, can’t wait to see how it goes on the water! Very schmick!

Some very interesting concepts there PP, also some very tidy work  . Very interested to see and here how it goes.

I was worried about the large loose section at the base of the sail as you raised it, but then you grabbed it by hand and I thought, Ok he is going to hold the sail. I am guessing from your comments of hands free fishing, that you plan to add a rope off the sail clew, so you can then cleat it and attend to rods etc?

Hi Nick,

Great Job!

It looks a bit like the rig my wife and I invented and produce, the Kayaksailor, especially the way the mast goes up and down.

I like your use of the solid forestay.

Keep up the good work!
