DIY New sail Version Two

Post by Mordy »

Wondered while the wind has dropped???

Decided to add another chapter into the sail making book, this time with a poly Tarp sail.
Found my last sail was a tad small and a bit fussy with all that sewing,
http://www.vyak.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=3583
so off to the $2 shop
1x5ft x7ft blue tarp
Liquid nails 1 Tube
2 metres of spectra cord to reinforce the edge
Cloth tape (like ducting only it has a cloth through it)
1 x 1M of yellow tongue....tongue

I alreay had the mast and boom from my last attempt and wanted to make better use of the bottom of the sail and get more tarp out there.
The fiddly bit was allowing for the knees clearence on the Hobie Peddle drive.
I glued some of the seams and just taped others to see how it would work on the actual kayak
I ended up cutting a section out of the bottom of the sail ( hate loosing sail!!!) to get a get more clearance then it was still not enough
( also had to allow space so the peddles so they wouldn't get caught in the rigging.
so I slipped an extra 200mm of dowel into the top of the PVC mast and added an extra 200mm at the bottom.
New mast height 2000mm
Sail 0.862 m2
Happy with the stiffness of the polytarp, think it will work well as a sail ($4.50) :D :D :D :D
Seemed quite responsive to the wind in the back yard. took about 5 hours all up.

Here are a few refernces on Poly Tarp Sails if you are interested

I also shaped this sail a bit having curved seam lines so when the wind hits it it will fill better more scalloped.
Next trick might be to stiffen the Mast with a rope to the front and maybe a bigger sail :yahoo: !!!
Just gotta wait for some wind.

Great stuff Mordy
Sail shaping too :yahoo: Getting a bit technical there mate.

Thing is , you know it will work as there have been a lot of people doing this for a long time with tarps.
I'm interested to hear about the liquid nails and it will be good to see how that goes. I have literally used thousands of tubes of that stuff and id never have thought of using it as I think it would dry to hard with not alot of flex, but will be interested to see how it goes.
Its all about learning from each other.

Ill also be interested to see how how mast handles the extra force on it, you may end up snapping it. A lot I've seen on the net have the dowel inserted into pvc tubing.

Will be interesting to see how it goes

As long as it's only the mast that snaps
It has 22mm dowl althrough it, but iwouldn't risk my life on it, still quite flexy.
All fun, I was goiung to go to hardware land and get some Kwikgrip, then saw this full tube of liquid nails hanging around the shed and thought why not?
Funny stuff the tarp, has this thin veneer of plastic, if you leave tape on iy too long it's had to remove without taking the suface off.
All fun.
Especially with the tarp so easy to do, whipem up, experiment all for $4.50
I don't know about Bass straight Ghurkin, Frankston would be fine.
