Kayak storage under the roof

Post by Jef »

I've spent a bit of time and all day yesterday trying to get a system that I'm happy with and now have a working one but I'm not greatly impressed with it.

The current system is four double pullies, attached to four consecutive rafters and four single pullies below them with straps embracing the 17' kayak.
Originally it was tied off at one end and the theory was that it could be completely controlled by the single 'live' end. I don't know if it is the cheap Bunnings pullies or not but that never worked.
The current raising process requires both ends of the rope being used and when the kayak's as high as it will go it's then tied off at the same end.
To make matters more complicated it's not a straight up and down, given the camper and trailer inhabiting the area the kayak has to be shimmied around 5' to be lifted up.
Also, I'll probably have to raise the double pullies up higher again as the kayak is only just clear of the 4x4 racks.

Any thoughts that bring consolation, illumination and elevation would be much appreciated.

this is what you want mate.

as you can see it has just 1 line which pills up both levers, sure they may not be exactly the same time based on weight distribution but it wouldnt be far off

it has essentially 5 pullies giving you more torque for the pull and a single tie off.
2 simple hooks through the eyelets of the boats front/back handle should be sufficient mount points as well as the system allowing you to maneuver around obstacles

Thanks Brett,

what I was trying to do was exactly what you've done except with four pullies.
I had it set up the same way but it was useless, the double pullies pulled around/twisted, and didn't operate down the tied off end.
I changed the rope to as thick as I could thread through and it improved the staying on the rollers but not the system.
Perhaps I've made a mistake in using the double pullies!?
Where your bike seat is, it looks like you have two singles on the roof; one each for the up and down.
Perhaps I made a mistake with more is better? I put four pullies in as the center of the Kayak needed to be supported so I thought I may as well maximize my leverage and match the rafters.
You've also inspired me to hang the push bikes currently draped around the backyard :D

Wow Bozzie, thats impressive,

Did you build that yourself or is it a kit?

Cheers

Very impressive!
I've googled it and there is a south Aus company 'Lifespace' that will deliver to metro Melbourne for $250.
It's a little more, well a lot more than I'd planned but looks an excellent system.
It's attached to a ceiling in all the photos but in my case it would need to be attached to the rafters [around 30 degrees].
Would that still work or would I need to make a bit of a framework for it to be attached to?

Also, I still would like to try and find out what I'm doing wrong or if it's the materials.

Any chance of posting some photo's of how you have done it, how you have routed the ropes through the pulleys etc?

Hard to say without a look at what you have done and where.
