AI at Lillydale today

Took the AI up to Lillydale lake today for a bit of a play. Was a bit surprised at how light the wind was as well as being very fickle blowing steady one minute then nothing the next :x :x . It was a bit disconcerting to have the yak roll hard to one side when the wind picked up and filled the sail but after that happened a few times I started to relax a bit. It was great to get really flying along, putting in a turn and having the sail crack as it tried taking my head off   After getting wet from the showers and forgetting to put the seat well bungs in resulting in a wet bum, also the need to pee got me off the water after around an hour of going up and down the lake. I still have a bit to learn about trimming the sail to get best performance out of it but I'm sure that will come with time and hours on the water. I am looking forward to getting those hours up, and am looking forward to catching up with another sailor or ten and learning a trick or two from them.

Yes it was my first proper outing in it...I had dived off it a few weeks ago but only went out and back in it. It was a bit like taking the Ferrari out but as I had no idea what I was doing it wasn't really a problem

I learnt to sail with Youth Hostels sailing club at Inverloch - Andersons inlet.
They had a few 14 foot sail boats a cat & a "Sail fish"
We used to launch next to the angling club.
YHA don't have a sailing club any more but Andersons inlet would be a good place to practice sailing the AI as long as the jet skis are not out in force.
Enjoy your new toy.

I had another play out on the bay at Millers rd on the weekend :yahoo: went for a fish with Eoin and there was no wind when we first went out at 10ambut by the time we came back in around 1:30pm there was a steady breeze blowing so I was able to sail back to the ramp going along at a steady 7kph, but still had to peddle a few times to keep up with Eoin....that stealth is dam fast   looking forward to my next outing :D :D

This might help Merv

The language is a bit strange but the idea is there and little sail boat he's showing has the right scale compared to the AI.
Tacking up wind the sail should swing "gently" from one side to the other as you change direction.
Downwind direction changes or jibing is where the boom on a yacht can take your head off with a thump
and if not done carefully can knock you down.

Google youtube sailing stuff might be an idea.
