Yup, those kingies were caught off Flinders, about a km off shore from the entrance. Found bigger ones there a couple weeks later (but didn't hook or land any - did hook a mako that ripped my rod holder clean off the mount though). I was feeling pretty down about the fish in Vic for a while there but am feeling more confident about it now. I'll be chasing tuna around Portland soon enough and will be spending a fair bit of time around the prom chasing kingies.
But yes... another trip to Fraser Isl in a few weeks to get my longtail fix!
Glad you guys are getting a kick out of the vid

Hey Josh.
Is it around this time of year that the small blacks are kicking around the shallows at fraser?
Thanks.
Dave

Nope, this time of year is hot for mack & longtail tuna, spanyards and queenfish. For marlin you want to be there late Oct through to Dec. There does seem to be a particular time that they show up on masse (if past 3 years is anything to go by) but I don't really want to be exact about that because each year we see more and more people crowding our camping spot.MrTall wrote:Hey Josh.

Might pay to make a video of all the hours you put in for no result, throw in some pics of sandflies (if they are there), some gear issues and general other downers. That should turn a few off.Yakass wrote:Nope, this time of year is hot for mack & longtail tuna, spanyards and queenfish. For marlin you want to be there late Oct through to Dec. Thanks Josh. You certainly make my yak fishing look pale.

Re: Ex girlfriend collaborates on new video!
Good point Galey. When people watch these clips some do assume its an absolute catch fest out there (quite often its the opposite of that) but the fact is that we do work hard for most of those fish and I think many would be surprised exactly how hard it can be. Pelagic fish usually move around pretty quick and we do a lot of chasing. To add to the difficulty they seem to move into the wind more often than not, so even with a sail we have to work at it. And when the wind drops off we're pedaling after them until we tire of it. Sometimes it pays to just kind of position yourself in the general area and sit and wait, but obviously we rely on luck in those instances.
The fact that the fish do move around so actively is one of the reasons I have often said that the Islands are the only model I'd even attempt it with. That and the fact we have to traverse a fair distance before even getting into the fishiest zone (Platypus Bay). Its about 60km from where we launch at Hervey Bay.

Love your work Josh. You squeeze the best out of the sport like an orange. As others have said here, you make us all look and feel terribly beige, but then laziness and contracted horizons will do that. Can't think of anyone else in the yak universe that can hold a candle to your achievements and for those lazy sods like me that like to live the yak life vicariously - thankyou!
