Some very good information on that one Tor.

I like this one for approaching and assisting a recovery, http://www.useakayak.org/recoveries_res ... roach.html
When we say it's BIG RED SEASON, we don't mean a big red blood stain on the bay,
GET YOUR LIGHTS ON + YOUR PFD'S.

Happy Sailing Fishing and keep blowing bubbles.

Yes, that's extremely good info.
It's the same principle I was taught when doing the rescue part of my AUSTSWIM teachers course.
I recommend everyone give it a good read.

so can we make a heading on the home page "Safety" and then provide a link to this website, otherwise it will get lost in the posts.

I think we need to stop making things harder for ourselves. Is the advice we give safe? no some of it is probably complete rubbish in my opinion and I'd never follow it, some of it is 1st rate and could make the difference to someones life . Things like people that have never practiced a recovery before be it shallow or deep water just scare me, it's not as easy as it seems and Elm is someone that can tell you 1st hand how something little quickly becomes bloody dangerous out there. I really don't see it being to long before some sort of legislation comes into place above the existing regulations already there for kayaking, particularly as the popularity of the sport grows. There are already plenty of organisations out there with specific training, practices and guidelines for sea kayaking, at the end of the day that's what we're doing, with fishing added onto it, if we're looking for that sort of thing, then tap into what already exists.

These are the Australian Canoeing guidelines for their trainers here They also run regular training

oh and a basic skills award test requires satisfactory performance and confidence to the instructors standard in the following skills

* Present craft and equipment for inspection (hatches and other equipment set or stowed ready for launch, spare equipment waterproofed).
* Swim 50 metres in canoeing clothes (shirt, shorts and sandshoes as a minimum, and with a personal flotation device (PFD), and swim under the craft to surface on the other side
* Show, to the Assessor’s satisfaction, a full understanding of the basic safety requirements for paddlers and their craft, and appreciation of the use of PFDs.
* Launch the craft, embark and paddle away from the launching point
* Demonstrate:
o understanding of correct posture and basic injury prevention
o paddling forwards, backwards, and emergency stops
o turning the craft
o the use of the paddle as a means of support on the water
o coming alongside another craft, and also a clear approach to the launching point
* Disembark, then re-embark, paddle to deep water, capsize and assist with a deepwater rescue or swim the craft ashore.

I'm in the process of hastling my school to pay for a trainers course(flatwater) but otherwise I think i'll do it myself later in the year regardless

The regulations/guidelines are out there, we just need to either follow them, or adapt them slightly to include the added dangers of fishing. If this is the minimum standards for just paddling in the ocean, surely paddling in the ocean with a bunch of fishing gear should be higher...
