I’m getting to the business end of pimping my new outback and want to mount a couple of rod holders that I can use for trolling and bait fishing. Everything else was easy, fish finder, anchor trolley etc. but the rod holders have me scratching my head (no it’s not nits). I don’t want to install anything that will interfere with the mirage drive operation and I also want to keep the deck as clear as possible. I’ve used Scotty 280’s in the past and though there as tough as nails, they allow the rod buts to encroach into the deck space and my gummy rod buts are a bit thick for them and tend to jamb at the most inappropriate times.
I like the way Scrumpy mounted a couple of Ram Tubes into the side trays of his outback however I am thinking that if I went down this path I would position the bases further towards the bow, with the right hand one hard against the back of the cup holder. This would mean that they could still be laid down flat when not in use but would position the rods further forward than his where I could get to the rods and see the rod tips more easily. I’ve trawled the net looking for similar set ups to this and haven’t been able to find any (am I missing something?).
All suggestions (except abusive ones) will be gratefully received.
Cheers,
Davo.

Not an outback, but to keep rod butts and reels out of the way this is what I did on the Quest. Scotty launchers (I also have slip disc adaptors which work well) Berkley quicksets with home made extensions. Berkleys can mount further forward than most as you can lift rod straight up without having to slide forwad, and but is out of way as you attach behind reel.
Spare pedestal mount located behind sounder so I can just use singel central Berly as an alternative

I dont trust RAM mounts on rocket launchers

The last video I posted of my Outback show the rod holders I am using now. I find them really useful, even though my first impression in the shop wasn't overly positive. Now I can't do without them.
Well past the edge, almost at the point of no return.

I have 3 ram rod holders mounted on my outback in exactly the same spots as Mav. My sounder is in the same spot too. The only difference is that I have added these extenders
http://slhobie.com.au/gear/mounts/473-r ... -extension
I have removed the locks off the ends and I have also found that a solid fish can pull them down irrespective of how tight I make them but I have seen somewhere that putting a grip off a cricket bat on the ram ball stops this, although I haven't gotten around to it yet.
