Guys
I have discovered a handy little tool for transfering the shape (in my case the inside hull) to material for cutting that nobody else seems to have mentioned. It's called a flexible curve ruler. They are made of lead and covered in durable urethane plastic with measurements on them.
The good thing about them is you can lay it in the hull, where your intended project is going, and bend it to the desired shape and it will retain that shape so you can transfer it to the material you want to cut. If you mark the hull while the ruler is in place you know exactly where you took the shape from.
They cost $12-$15, depending on the length, from Art Supply places . Officeworks probably stock them as well.

I wouldn't recommend using one for measuring your waist in the Vyak Biggest Loser
I certainly wouldn't want a 3D version of my belly
(well, not another one anyway, the one I live with is enough)
