I just put pool noodle around the bars, bound them the whole width with grey tape and use Rhino straps (the pull down type as they don't hurt the yak at all) but I've heard not to use the ratchet type as it's very easy to distort / crush the hull. As a precaution I put a bike lock cable around the bar and thru the front drive well just in case a strap ever breaks, preventing the front of the yak lifting completely off the roof rack.
