Snelling hooks for snapper ?

Post by frappa11 »

Read on a FB fishing group some guys were speculating that they should not to snell hooks when fishing for bigger snapper as they gnaw on the hook so snelling gives a higher chance of being bitten off (i.e. the snell covers more of the hook shaft).

Any opinions on this ?

Depends on the size of the hook and style. With circle hooks they will mostly be hooked in the corner of the jaw so less chance of being gnawed off. I generally snell all my circles.

Thats interesting Shane, im the other way i snell my J hooks, however if i had a snelled circle when hooking the shark of both sharks last week i would have got to take pics ;) im using 4/0 snelled for my snapper setup and 6/0 for single circles, what size are you using?

Snapper it's generally 5/0 but I will go bigger depending on the bait and location, up to 8/0 single. Snelling works better with a circle hook as it provides a stiffer straight connection to the hook shank that keeps it in line better as it slides into the jaw corner. A normal knot will allow the circle hook to pivot on the line more, potentially letting it get out of alignment before the line drags it into the corner of the mouth.

or just use a knotless hook.
Well past the edge, almost at the point of no return.

I use a knotless system to attach all my hooks accept on my light rigs where i use a loop knot

I just looked up some different ways of attaching hooks, the knot i use is knotless knot (the only thing my old man taught me about fishing lol) i couldn't find any information on its strength, however all suggestions pointed to the palmer knot @95%

Nope they are the imposters, I am talking about the ones I used to sell, like the picture.

I only ever use a single snelled circle hook for snapper fishing and have never been gnawed off. It rarely misses a hook up and I rarely pull hooks.
But there is a right and a wrong way to do it.

The first picture is wrong with the hook naturally 'turning away' from the leader.

The second picture is correct with the hook naturally 'turning in' towards the leader, which encourages the hook to roll into the corner of the jaw.
