As the heading says I plan to build a kayak this one isn't for fishing it wont have the stability for that being quite a bit narrower than my stealth
I wonted something just for paddle days and the odd paddle challenge - something lighter than the stealth and of cause with much less drag for an old feeble paddler to push along
I first looked at Nick Schades Yukon Racing Sea Kayak
https://www.guillemot-kayaks.com/guille ... ayak_plans
and also Bjorn Thomassons Panthera
https://www.thomassondesign.com/en/cata ... s/panthera
But instead downloaded Kayak Foundry and had a go at designing something for myself - so after quite a few designs I settled on my Mk 2.4
its a 5.75 meter long kayak with a 5.59 meter water line - the maximum beam is 54.2 cm and the max waterline beam is 48.4 cm
the hull is quite rounded and I don't expect a high primary stability ( secondary should be ok ) but the rounded hull shape cuts down wetted area and of cause drag
the plan is to strip the hull in 4 mm paulownia which is lighter that western red cedar so will help keep the weight down
the weight should come in around 15 -16 kg and the predicted drag figures look good so it's all systems ahead
above is the study drawing
forms have been printed out and are glued onto some MDF hopefully that drys over night and I can cut the forms out
and fitted up on a strong back

X2 make a to scale model to test it, cardboard will dolaneends wrote:Ambitious.. it will be rewarding
Not sure ambitious is the right word, but near enough! If you want to do it? Why not? Nothing wrong with investing in a hobby, go for it i say. I've made a couple of wooden boats, the first was my learning curve, the second was just to see if i was able to do it completely without help, both floated quite well, and as designed. However both were from proven designs. The joy was in building them, then the initial launch.
I'm seriously looking forward to the step by step description (with pics) of your build and test runs
