Made a downrigger (hope it works)
I am lucky enough to have my Father's 21st present from my Mother, an Alvey reel and Jarvis Walker surf rod. I have used it a handful of times but the rod needs new guides. I am planning on doing this and use a Penn Battle 8000. So what to do with the Alvey ? Well using a 30kg game rod with a snapped tip, the base of my ram tube rod holder that was cut down after I used it for bull horn style holders and a few home bits and pieces I made a downrigger. Using the rod middle section and a rod tip a 6mm hole was placed slightly offset in the base of the ram mount. Sliding the tip through the base I used resin to hold it in place. No, I found an 8mm stainless bolt and drill a 7mm hole tapped a thread and bolted the reel on the base simple. Add some coloured braid and a 300lb swivel and we are done. I know have to figure out where to mount it and give it a go hopefully some nice pelagics or trout surcum to a deep bait.

Looks good, similar to Grants setup.
I found having a proper downrigger a big plus at SWR this year. I'm also looking forward to using it at Bullen Merri and some offshore spots.

Sounds like a plan to me. The old trout has always eluded me but things may changeshane wrote:Looks good, similar to Grants setup.
