Ian - Eoin had a rack bar made that clips onto the sides of the bonnet to support the skis on long trips , it may also be worth a look at - someone over his side of the world Fabbed it up out of aluminium

or most bull bars and or nudge bar bolt onto the bumper iron mounts of cause most new cars dont run bumper irons and in fact most front wheel drive dont have a lot of structural points forward of the engine - just enough to hold a radiator and some plastic

There can also be issues with things bolted onto the front setting off airbags too apparently which is why I went with the bonnet option, but since then commercial options have come available for carrying outrigger canoes which might also work:

How do those things work?
Never mind, I can see all the pictures now I'm not on the phone.

Looks like a purpose built version of the ladder I was planning on using, it also looks like it should be relatively straightforward to lengthen by cutting and sticking an insert in the middle.

I think the kayak would need to sit on an angle in the racks because it would be too wide at those points to lie flat but I don't think that would cause any problems.

Digging this one up from the vyak vault as I'm soon to push the button on a PF525 and wondering how everyone overcame the overhang issue at the front when car topping long kayaks.

I'm about to have delivered a Ford Everest and from what I can see when keeping to the 60% of wheelbase rule there will be a significant amount at the front of the kayak that will not be supported. As it's a new car I'm not keen on doing something like what Eoin had made at the front, instead would rather have a frame to sit on the roof rails to attach cradles/lock rack, similar to what Cheater suggested below. Has any one bought or had one made to resolve the issue?

Just looking at these another option may be to make a light beam ( sq tube ) with a pair of cross beams to fit lock rack

This could clamp to see roof racks with maybe some form of support at the end Might be worth thinking about
As most of my fishing would be within an hours drive (subject to being released) is this something I don't need to worry about unless I'm going further a field.

Cheers

Firstly good luck roof topping a 525 onto an Everest!

I've had a PF525 on a Focus and now a Focus wagon without a problem. You'll just have to find where the kayak sits fore/aft between the roof bars. The front end of the everest is practically the same as the Ranger so the roof bar locations are probably the same. Frank used to transport his PF525 on his Ranger with just the two standard bars

I find that most journeys are ok with just roof bar straps, but if running longer journeys I tend to put a front strap to stop the kayak from lifting.

Always good to put a hi-viz sock or similar on the stern to at least show any glancing policemen/women that you're doing your best.

Thanks Reeling. I'm currently car topping a 38kg kayak onto a Nissan murano and everest is only 100mm higher so it'll probably be similar on the pain in the arse scale to what I'm doing now.

The focus wagon looks similar to the everest in terms of the front rail distance from the rear of the car so you must be running a good sized overhang off the front or are you pushing the rear overhang out slightly. Up until last week I was intending to get a 475 due to garage space so front overhang would be manageable but now the extra 500mm throws it out a fair bit.

Ye you'll enjoy it being lighter, thats for sure. What you may notice though is the extra 1.5m length catches the wind a bit when you are lifting it onto the roof.

Ye i think the focus wagon is on boardline. The PF525 is balanced pretty well on my roof rack when the bow is about level with the front of the car - so legally as far forward as it can be. I think this means the stern is around that 60% mark - plus or minus.

I dont think its looks drastic because, being a wagon, it has a fair bit of body overhang rearward of the rear axle, whereas compared to a hatchback, the rear body overhang is less. Anotherwords, comparing a hatch and wagon with the same wheelbase, the wagon will have less kayak hanging out the back in "free air" and inherently look better.

EDIT: Focus wagon and Hatch have wheelbase of 2700mm, but wagon has 282mm extra rear overhang

I'm digging this one back up as I'm needing to buy a second car for work which will also double up as transport for the stealth. I don't need anything too big as we have the Everest so was thinking of a focus or similar. Overhangs should be OK with the 475 so only looking at a hatch and not a wagon. The only issue I see is the roof rail spacings as the distance between the footwell venturi and transducer recess is around 700mm and most smaller cars recommend spacing the roof bars at 750mm. What cars are everyone using to transport their skis and did you increase the distance between roof bars? I'm thinking I'll need to space the bars around 900mm to give sufficient clearance from Venturi's and recess but unsure whether this distance is possible on smaller cars.

Reeling, do you remember whether you increased the roof bar spacings on the focus and if so what to?

Cheers

Craig

Wagons/cars with roof rails rather than fixed mounting points are the best option if you can.
Ian has a home made version of a wash-rider carrier to extend the points of support on a smaller car.

I was thinking of using the gutterless roof rack clamps as this will allow for the bar spacing to be increased. If spacings dont work well then I might look at the wash rider option. I'd probably go down the DIY route though and incorporate the lock racks. I don't think I could go back to tie downs any more :D
