New Kayak (similar to glide pro from Rays @$999

Post by Legrant »

Hi all,

First post, new to the yak scene. I got a place down in Rosebud and saw these for cheap went and grabbed one.

http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/morningt ... 1121289401

The seat is shite, will fix it.

The rudder is shite, figured I don't need it.

I'm 70 kg and it feels pretty stable, yet to properly test it out though.

Anyone had any experience with these or a glide pro?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Vyak,
I don't have any experience or know anyone with the yak you bought but it looks like a reasonable entry model for the price.
Reasonable length & looks stable, especially for a 70kg person.
You will find a comfy seat is a necessity if you are going to be fishing on the water for long periods and
you will use the rudder, depending on what you do & where you go.
Have a read of the safety sections & introduce yourself on say g'day.
You may get replies from people near Rosebud to go fishing with.

What is wrong with the seat rudder etc?
The ad says you have a 5 year warranty.

Tim399 has something similar (scorpio terrapin XL) and beefed up the rudder by laminating it with a bigger sleeve, laminated over existing blade.

Most kayak seat are pretty crap on basic models, even the pre vantage hobie ones. I would'nt bother making frames etc rarely worth the effort and stuff up the stability etc. If it eventually bugs you enough get a quality aftermarket seat. If you want more padding just laminate some gym mat foam under your existing seat pad. Perforate the layers and zip tie them together. When paddling get used to not leaning back on the seat. Glass yaks generally don't have even have backs.

Best to use a yak a fair bit before throwing money at it.

Welcome Lloyd :wave1:
I'm surprised you took the rudder off??
Have you tried turning the yak in rough conditions (choppy or windy) without the rudder?
If the yak is 4m the turning radius can't be that great???

Believe it or not Rich in a paddle yak the turning circle is better with the rudder out of the water than in it. You shouldn't actually use a rudder to turn a paddle yak, its more to help track straight into the wind. If you are turning a paddle yak, you 'should' use a sweep stroke, with the rudder down the rudder is the pivot point, hence giving a long turning circle, if you pull the rudder up on the other hand the pivot point becomes the centre of the yak so it turns in its own length and is much more efficient.
