My 2010 Hobie outback leaking...

Post by Jules »

Hi guys,

Picked up a second hand outback recently from someone who had only used it twice. Was in great condition, purchased from an older couple that were going to use it for bird watching.

Used it a few times and was stoked with it. Ive only used it 4 times but have noticed it taking on some water the last couple of outings.

After last trip I put the yak on some stands and filled her up with water. It basically filled to the brim before i discovered a small crack in the upper section of where the trolley wheels go. The crack is towards the top of the hole, just behind seat.

Im not really sure what to do, can anyone help here? I am assuming because i bought it second hand i dont have any warranty.

What i am concerned about the most is i honestly did nothing that im aware of to cause a crack? And searching around on the net i see that cracks are pretty common with hobies??

First thing to do is contact your closest hobie dealer.
If there is nothing they can do (warrenty wise) contact forum member Ghurken.
I have seen a few of his yak repairs and his workmanship is of high quality.
I survived the June 2012 Vyak server crash, just.

I would do as the guys said and take it to the nearest Hobie dealer.
When your cart is in, the tops of the cart pipes must protrude out above the holes otherwise the tops of the pipe put stress on the sidewalls of the holes and they crack. Has happened to quite a few older models.

I agree with the others, best to try a hobie dealer or "The yak doctor" Ghurken. If you want to try the repair yourself there is a video on youtube titled "My Hobie Outback kayak scupper hole repair"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIlobCJSQeo
The guy in the video, Michael from Kayak fly angler glues and clamps some PVC pipe around the scupper post inside the hull to repair a tear. He claims it worked. If the link doesn't work try a search on youtube.

I just watched the clip.
Very simple but effective solution.
I think fitting those tubes to the earlier outbacks before they crack would help stop any future cracks.

Hi guys just an update.....

I rang Scott Lovig and told him about the issue, and that I was second owner etc.. Ive had to email him some pics of the cracks. Found out that there is a second crack which isn't as bad too.

He has forwarded the issue onto to Hobie and apparently they can either fix the problem or swap the hull for a newbie? ( with a 3-400$ excess).
Anyway we will see. Scotts service has been second to none I should point out.

Hobie in general seem to be second to none when it comes to product support. They replaced my Outback, brand new leaked. I have heard of 3-4 year old second owner hulls being replaced by Hobie as well. We have a dealer up this way who's support has been fantastic and Scott and the SLH guys are great to deal with as well.
Would love to see the Hobie model for dealer selection etc because I have never heard a bad word about a Hobie dealer either here in Austrlia or NZ. A lot of other companies  could do well by having a talk to Hobie.
