There are handy little stubby safety knives for this purpose rather than using your bait knife. You dont want to go stabbing yourself in a panic either, serrated edges are best for this purpose

Your a good man for posting about your misadventure. A lesson for all of us.
Reaching back seams like a common cause for a drinking.
Re knives, I carry a dive knife strapped to my leg.
Good point about a bilge pump. I think I will leash my pump or attach a float to it.
Pb: snapper 67cm, garfish 44cm, calamari hood 25cm
