Anchor lost in Western port - ?

Post by frappa11 »

Last trip to western port I lost my anchor - I did not realize what happened until the fight with the snapper and i noticed that somehow i was drifting when i should be anchored

i pulled up my anchor line and found that the line had a frayed end. The line is poly line rated to 100kg I bought at bunnings, I dont think it would have snapped on its own. The time when it snapped was close to slack tide with very slow current so no way the current would have done this.

Did it get bitten off by something ? i.e. toothy ? If so any reason why it would bite ? i did not have any burley out and I wasnt cleaning fishing/dripping guts behind the boat or anything.

Scratching my head on this one - is this common in WP ?

Ditched my Anchor & rope in the washing machine down there while helping a mate who got himself side on to full current flow. My anchor rope wrapped around my fingers & with the current starting to spin me & cut the circulation I had to think quick. So there are plenty of anchors littered all over WPB I’m sure but knots coming undone not likely.
If it did fray & break must’ve been some cheap junk. Did you use Parachord?
A possibility if you were on a very very sharp reedy area & were being massively dragged against/away from the anchor?

I cant remember but it was just the 3mm stuff from bunnings

but it was around half hour to the low so basically there was little to no movement in water - thats why i doubt it snapped on its own

being bitten off is the only reason i can think of but again why ? scratching my head

I thought that myself once when i had 30lb braid running over my anchor line while spinning around during a tide flow change, i quickly passed my rod around everything to stop it cutting the anchor line ;)

If it had been next to a sharp reef, or rock, it could have been rubbing and fraying for a while then finally let go. I lost an anchor next to a reef once because the rope frayed and so it snapped before the zip cord when the anchor snagged. It was thicker line than yours. If you zip the top to the anchor that can also fray it over time. I now put a shackle on the rope and zip the shackle to the anchor so the zip doesn't rub on the rope.

As Eoin is hinting at if you use braid lines if they wrap the anchor rope they can bite into it.

I had 1 main braid line, which i guess could explain it ? but that rod never got a strike around the time when I lost my anchor

reg the reef bit - are there reefs in lang lang/jam jerrup/spit point ? i thought it was all mud ? if there are reefs there that probably explains it

ok thats fine by what you guys are saying its probably not something that commonly happens in WP - I thought I was missing or doing something obviously wrong - guess its just a freak occurance.
