What fish is this?

I have no idea what this is, caught it on the drift off clifton springs a couple of weeks ago.

Angel Shark was my first thought also. Have never caught one, but was on a boat when one was caught a few years ago, took us a while to ID it at the time. Unusual catch given they tend to lie around semi submerged on the floor during the day.

I would say Angel Shark - saw one night diving at Sorrento years ago, about 5 foot long.
Well past the edge, almost at the point of no return.

Angel Shark for sure. Squatina australis is the one

Looks like a carpet shark to me, did it have a strong pungent smell? In NZ they call them carpet sharks.

They look very similar, as far as smell, i dont recall smelling anything.

Look again at the original photo looking for belly fins behind the pectoral fins then at the photos above.

It's definitely an angel shark and not a carpet shark
