At 2:30 today, VMR received a call that a kayaker was in trouble, a couple of kilometres out from Balnarring.
VMR's Hastings vessel TX1 was on scene, in under 30 minutes from leaving the Marina. Thanks to one of our most experienced skippers Neil, who was able to cut across Middle Bank, we saved up to 15 minutes.

The Police Air-Wing arrived, and located the male, in the water, they dropped 2 orange smoke canisters, and TX1 was able to very quickly attend and had the person on-board within seconds.
He was then taken to the Stoney Point boat ramp to a waiting ambulance, where he was given the all-clear.

The kayaker said he started taking water about 3 kilometres out, and soon after the vessel turned over leaving him in the water. His vessel sunk along with his wallet, keys and phone.
His only fear was not going home to see his newborn baby and 2 other children.

Navigator Tim said, "we are so lucky in Victoria to be able to call on the Police Air-Wing to assist in locating people lost at sea. It was a great outcome in what we were expecting to be a long drawn out search".

VMR recommend that kayakers carry a good quality life jacket and a personal locator beacon (PLB). Skipper Neil said " if he had a PLB, we could have been with him in about 20 minutes" as it was the kayaker was in the water for over 1 hour.

I read this thismorning on FB. I'm not sure how/who raised the alarm to begin with if he lost his phone and didnt have a PLB....

It then begs the question if it was someone on the water raising the alarm why they couldn't assist.

I do carry my phone in a waterproof case and have it on my person in my PFD pocket, but feel alot more comfortable in myself knowing I now have a PLB and Marine Radio.

I also wonder whether I should also carry my flares if going out at night - even within the 2nm requirement

Hahaha - who didn't see that coming.
Well past the edge, almost at the point of no return.

He might have had his phone on him and was able to call in a rescue. Mine is always in my pfd so worst case I can call someone while floating around.

Edit:
Nvm, it says it sunk with all his other S#!^. What a clown. I half suspect this is just another stunt like the last incident. Maybe he wants an insurance payout or something
