Police found a kayak abandoned & half submerged & anchored this afternoon off Sandridge Beach Port Melb this afternoon.
Does it look familiar or does anybody know anything?

Non breakaway anchor and front hatch missing. Asking for trouble and maybe why it was abandoned.
Hope they are ok.
Good heads up for having your id on the kayak.

Interesting that the front hatch cover appears to have been unbolted and removed. I suspect the person responsible thought it would sink.Yako wrote:Police found a kayak abandoned & half submerged & anchored this afternoon off Sandridge Beach Port Melb this afternoon.

This is something I've wondered about in the past. It would be nice if there were a voluntary registration system where kayaks could be issued an identification code akin to those used for vessels requiing registration (but without the annual fee). Basically an opt-in system that allows ownership of a PWC to be ascertained if it's applied. Might also be useful for deterring theft on plastic yaks because it should be possible to 'brand' the code into the plastic (while this could of course be removed it should be pretty obvious that it's been done).laneends wrote:Good heads up for having your id on the kayak.

You can of course buy a bottle of micro dots with your details on them, I did this some years ago and put them on all my valuables.
They come in a small bottle with an applicator brush and are suspended in a liquid 'glue' which dries clear, the dots are almost invisible to the naked eye but contain something like your drivers licence number.
When I got mine it was a freeby and the initiative of our then insurance company.

Interesting to note that the kayak was anchored, 150m from beach.
Fell out, and couldn't get back on? So then swam to shore?
TSV and VicPol encourage all yakkers to have a name and contact label on the hatch lid.(inside or out)
Common sense really.
Hope that was the case for this chap.

May or may not have been anchored when it tipped, Anchor would have deployed anyway if coiled loose.erik the viking wrote:Interesting to note that the kayak was anchored, 150m from beach.

The person responsible has contacted the police. Apparently he got swamped and swam to sure assuming his kayak had sunk. It's on The Age's website

What a dingleberry. Went out in a yak with the front hatch missing then didn't bother to inform the water police that he thought it had sunk (and/or was a possible navigation hazard). In fact he didn't even bother checking if it had sunk before he swam off. Wouldn't surprise me if alcohol was involved.
