Good and Bad PFD's for Kayaks

Post by Reeling »

As I start to accumulate stuff i thought I would start with the most important - PFD.

There appears to be a million choices out there, so I thought I was ask the Brain's Trust what PDF's they found good and which to avoid - both in terms of function but also comfort.

In non-inflatables:
If you want pockets & comfort go with an Ultra pinnacle
If comfort is priority the Mocke Paddler and is awesome
If you have a high seat/backrest then the stolquist range have the foam high up in the back to allow you to sit back.

Thanks Eoin.

I'll be looking for one suitable for a vantage seat on a Hobie Revo

hitting up BCF for price match tonight

I had one of the pinnacle vests it was awesome, unfortunately it went with my OK... I have used plenty and feel more comfortable in a non inflatable type plus the storage for valuables like phone, plb & radio is a massive +. If you end up in trouble or separated from the yak the inflatables are good for keeping your head above after inflation. If you need to swim re-enter or flip the yak I found it really hard with the inflatable.

I've had an Ultra Sportfish for a while and find it really comfortable. Loads of pockets and you can pick them up pretty cheap if :D you shop around.

Good:
I've got an Ultra Trek which I have found to be very good. It has a bunch of pockets on it which is handy given the lack of storage on my yak

Bad:

This is a question I'm interested in too ... looking at a non-inflatable with decent pockets that would be comfortable for use with a hobie vantage seat.

Please ignore that it is an SLH add- but I just changed to this and it works fabulously well in my A.I. with the vantage seat and my Outback with the old seat. I have used an inflatable but changed to solid for a number of reasons. Then I changed to this style and it is great because it doesn't ride up on my short arsed body, like the previous one did.

I figure the more pockets the better! On a separate issue, has anyone waterproofed the front of their jackets using a product like waterproof sprays used on canvas tents etc. or the outdoor scotchguard product. The goal is to easily clean squid ink and other assorted crud of it.
