Followed it up and this website has a free download to the test materials:

Is it the handbook from this link.

Here is the handbook:https://www.amc.edu.au/handbooks

I think you have to pay for a hard copy but let me confirm this.

Hi Guys,

Apologies this has taken so long but I have not really had feedback from my friend about the course.
I have however had another email from Westernport Coast Guard that they are conducting another course.
This one seems different in that you study yourself and then go and sit the test which I think might be suitable for you all.
PLEASE NOTE, FORMS NEED TO BE IN THIS MONDAY IF YOU WISH TO ATTEND.

Please see the forms for download here:

http://www.vyak.net/Radio%20Course%20Registration.docx
http://www.vyak.net/SROCP.docx

And the details I got sent are here:
Good afternoon,

Coast Guard Westernport are running a VHF Radio Course on Sunday December 13th at 12:30pm
This will be held at their base in Hastings.

All the information is attached as well as a registration form.

Please have the registration form returned to Westernport Coast Guard by Monday 30th November.

Please contact Brad 0451105382 or John 0434720006 for any queries.

I have been in contact with Brad from the coast guard and he was very happy to hear that kayakers are taking VHF radios out.
He has offered to send us some further information that might assist and I will post this when received.

:bump:
Not sure how many of you followed up with this since 2016 but,
I have just registered to sit the Australian Waters Qualification VHF marine radio course at Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron.
It is on Sat 12th Jan 2019 8:30 till 12:30.
Being run by Peninsula Boat Training (also known as Victorian Boat Training or Melbourne Boat Training).
Cost is $175

Evidence of attaining the AWQ qualification is required if your VHF radio has DSC and you want to obtain a Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) to be allocated to your radio/yak

If any Vyaker with hand held VHF marine radios for use on their yak want to join me the details & registration process are below.

http://www.victorianboattraining.com.au ... io-course/

If you are investigating VHF radio & licence reqts there is also a more recent Vyak thread titled "VHF radio info for the tuna/kingy chasers"
