Bear Gully Yak Dive

Post by dilwad »

Hit up Bear Gully for a dive from the oasis yesterday.

The free camping and stinky coal smoke in the valley make it a busy place on a long weekend!

Met up with he dive buddy, geared up and knocked back the ~6km to Cape Liptrap into a stiff westernly in less than an hour. Also passed two ab divers on the way. Headed into the lee of the westerly under the lighthouse and jumped in to find a murky 3-4m vis. It was also becoming overcast, so a change of plans from kings to crays. As I left the dive torch at home, had to stick my head right up the ledges to let the eyes adjust to the darkness. To my disgust, everytime I found promising ledges I would have a look and be headfirst into a port jackson shark orgy. Have never seen so many stuffed into every good ledge!

After sizing up the usualy reefies, including some silver drummer and kilo + sweep, we jumped on the yak for a break before we checked the time and the dive buddy realised he had to be home in an hour. So we called it a day and hammered back to the camp.

Diving was ordinary but the yakking was enjoyable.
