One thing I'm surprised in is no one down here really targets threshers as they are in good numbers here and you don't need to go far offshore to get them.
And where does one find these threshers? Never caught one, so I'm keen. Never caught a mako either and I'm keen to try that to :-)

Great vid as always Josh you're certainly expanding the boundaries of the sport and having some fun while you're at it.

Interesting discussion re. Offshore there's a few that do head out, and probably a few more that don't talk about it too much. I've played out there a bit in the past chasing threshers and kingies but like Vik said there's as many makos cruising around the heads at the moment as anything else and not something I want to play with regardless of the size. I found I'd be picking up similar species to what I'd get in the bay(better size) or annoying reef types wrasse etc so eventually the extra travel time and effort to head offshore gave way to the easy cruise around the bay. If you look at the type of fishing most northern ppb people do they're within 1k of the shore and either drifting casting plastics or soaking baits, so the space and comfort of the outbacks and PA's seems to win out. The need to cover distances just isn't there for most. Definitely potential out there.

You can pretty much catch makos anywhere in 20 plus meters or even ppb/southern parts of wp if you can get them to show. They do go for lures but you'd be better of ballooning a bait and drifting.

Threshers much the same but will turn up in shallower areas. I think a few blokes hooked up to some in ppb in November.
Wilsons prom would be nice for them and portland. These you can troll for or balloon.
I believe they like rocky headlands.

West side around Apollo bay we used to find them generally chasing the salmon schools as they moved around the coast, lost plenty of xraps hooking them on light gear. Makos check the boat reports they're pretty common in 20-40 off barwon.

Yeah mate, its all horses for courses, I know. For this reason I am always wary of telling people (customers) which kayak I fish from in case they assume that I'm trying to tell them its the best (I try not to infect people with my bias). I would never say that the Ai is the 'best' - all hobie's are equal in a certain sense. Its all about getting the right yak for the job, which is why there are almost 20 of the things in their range!

Good tips - much appreciated mate :-)

There are a few smaller ones caught in PPB mainly close to the heads but I reckon anywhere along the Vic south coast there would be plenty including at the entrance and outside WP .

My personal knowledge of them is from my local water and there are plenty of them from the rip at PP heads right through to Torquay.

Have a youtube search of yak based threshers, there are heaps of awesome vids on there
This one was interesting on what can go wrong  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_veBSnK_KJQ

This Vid gives you a perspective of the damage the tail can do too, you really need to respect the tail.

and this ones a bit different :yahoo:

As far as Mako's go as i'm sure your aware, they are nuts of fish and will come up and chew on your yak without any fear of you.
Plus once hooked you stand the chance of being wiped out by them jumping right on you.
This vid is a bloody classic.

Man, you've inspired me. Now I'm really keen to chase down a thresher, and find that mako video strangely provocative! I needed inspiration and there it is - cheers!

AFAIK targeting Makos involves pretty full on burleying to bring em in to a livey or switch baiting them ? By-catch using those methods = GWS. I have a feeling the next Paddlefield could be your best...and possibly your last

No worries at all mate, still going strong. Those reels have performed really well.

I won't be burleying... too messy. To be honest I'll be surprised if a Rapala CD Magnum doesn't attract a Mako... I've hooked many sharks with these. For some reason they find that lure irresistable. I'll be very surprised if Makos don't go for them. Either way, my next episode won't be my last. Sharks really don't really bother me anymore - I've had a few brushes with whites and have pretty much been desensitized to the things to be honest. It helps that I use an AI. Its not like the yak is going to tip over and as such, I don't think there's really anything much to fear.
