Kayak with a sail, classed as of beach sailing yacht

Post by ELM »

Hi all, owning an AI you need to understand that you come under the same regulations as an Off the Beach Sailing Yacht when using the full AI and not the Human powered vessel regulations that you follow when using a kayak.

With so many adding sails to there kayaks, I started to wonder, if you add a sail to your kayak, will you come under the same regulations.
If you do not already know, the answer is yes. Once you add a sail to your kayak, you come under the;
Minimum safety equipment requirements for sail powered.
There is no need to panic, if you are not aware that you come under a different class and regulations, as it only really affects the pfd that you have to wear in most cases.

Where you were allowed to wear a Type 1-2 or 3 pfd in;
* Coastal Inshore (<2nm from coast (which by the way, is <3.704 Km))
* Enclosed (Bays and estuaries)
* Inland (Rivers, lakes & dams)
You will have to wear either a Type 1 or 2 pfd. Type 3 pfd's are not acceptable.

And where you were allowed to wear a Type 1-2 or 3 pfd, in;
* Coastal offshore (>2nm from coast)
Only a Type 1 pfd is acceptable. Also different when in this area "Coastal Offshore" you will also require a marine radio, Red star parachute distress rocket , and strangely, neither, a torch or oars are required.

As always, check the regulations and stay safe out there sailing :yahoo: .
When we say it's BIG RED SEASON, we don't mean a big red blood stain on the bay,
GET YOUR LIGHTS ON + YOUR PFD'S.

Happy Sailing Fishing and keep blowing bubbles.
Cheers
Eddie
