The new rudder one the new ones are a fair bit better but my rudder works perfectly on 2010 AI, one of the downsides I reckon is the way the akas connect to the crossbars on the newer models. The ones on the older models are a lot more simpler and easier.

Same here - agree 100%. Never had any issues with the standard rudder, although I do have the rudder-upgrade kit sitting in the cupboard - can't be bothered to fit it.

One other disabvantage with the new rudder is that it does stick out when stowed, which makes car-topping a bit more of a hassle. You can always remove the rudder pin
and bungee the rudder assembly against the hull, but that's also a pain in the rump. The twist-n-stow rudder is a great design.

The new crossbar/akas connection just introduces two more points of potential failure. The orginal drop-in pin method was an example of simplicity and functionality.

The one from action kayak and sail? It doesn't look bad at all, has the older pedal lock system and what not but who cares when you've a got the exact Same sail and the hull is mostly the same as the new onesl. Go for it I say

.....i reckon the biggest factor in the performance of any a.i. is the weight of the occupant. In my case .....I'm pretty heavy and Ive seen my fellow A. I. uses fly by me with both amas clean out of the water....i hate that.

That new rudder is a massive improvement on the old one. I would install it ASAP if I was you. The con you raised is barely an issue once you get used to it. As for the new xbar system, believe it or not we've seen less problems with that than we did the old system. The new system has held up really very well.
