Interesting thanks Iain.

Speaking of eating in our area, we were convinced to go to the Nicholson Pub for Chinese last night as it was said to be good. It wasn’t!

Utter crap in fact!

I used to stay there once a month and the food was good and the motel was quite good, the hosts were Paul and Pauline, he was a retired Snr Sgt from Bairnsdale and not a bad bloke, we stayed there a couple of years ago and they had moved on, the food had gone downhill and the rooms smelled of mildew.
We won't go back there, The Retreat I think it is called, a pity it has been let go as it has great potential being on the river.
Another questionable place (or two), Lakes Entrance RSL, very basic and another club, could be the sports club with some shocking wannabe Asian food, the Bowls Club wasn't bad though and a pub on the waterfront was good but I can't recall the name.
Probably closer to you, Bullant Brewery (Bruthen) puts on a good meal when we have been up there.
Big pub in the main street in Bairnsdale with the pokies has some good meals at times, we have stayed there and it wasn't too bad, never tried the one near the river opposite the park.
The Thai at the yacht club in Paynesville was nice but most places there are quite good.
The pub in Stratford is one place I will not go to again, possibly one of the worst meals I have had, a microwaved supermarket lasagne served with chips and tomato sauce, very vomit worthy.

Yes experiences can differ even in between shift changes but there are usually some good feeds to be had. I find that things are a bit itinerate in the catering game and we have been known to follow the better chefs from place to place. There is a great little Chinese Malaysian cafe restaurant around the corner from Telstra called "2 Spoons". Cheap lunch specials are really good value there!

The Bullant is almost our local and the owners are ex Sarfieldians and are well known to us, in fact Neil designed our house. I usually go the hamburger and it usually stops me in my tracks!
Meals at the Brewery are usually good standard.

Bruthen pub now it’s run by “Stretch” is going well too. Again basic food but good tucker!

The Imperial opposite the caravan park just over the river is flat out basic, though cheap. Interesting as it often floods, there is a large boat in a room with a roller door in a back room so they can bolt if the water gets too deep!! It’s a nice place to sit and have a drink...the boat that is!

If you like a pizza or meal generally then the Windmill Pizza is terrific. They are in Stevenson Road Nicholson. They even deliver to Sarsfield!!

Damn! Now I’m hungry!!

Gael lost her sister Joyce yesterday and neither of us felt like cooking so we went to the Terminus for tea.

I’ve seen “Sliders” on the menu in this country only twice and wanted to try them.

We chose sliders as a shared entree with a bowl of the best beer battered chips you’ve ever tasted.

Gael had the pulled pork and I had the beef & chicken. They were all yummy! The brioche buns were soft and perfect for the job.

The pork had a tasty chutney flavouring, the beef, slices of pickle and a nice sauce and the chicken was crispy and on a bed of tangy coleslaw. We will be having them again!

With the chips this is certainly a meal for one but last night we shared the sea food plate too. The beer batter on the fish came through as tasting of beer and sweet, lovely fish in fact. There was a separate bowl of mussels cooked in a sauce that was basically Mediterranean but you could taste the individual flavours in the sauce which to me is the sign of a good chef.
All very fresh!

We had a fantastic meal for $55 for 2 and the waitress was great (and cute), so if you are travelling through our fair city and want a good meal, I can certainly recommend the Sliders to you.
New management there Digger, I know the family well.

Will pass on the review, their father was a great cook and an even better man he would be proud of all involved in their venture.
A few years ago they had a cafe in Metung, mmm the falafel I can still taste it.

OK Bruce, interesting to know mate!

The waitress went above and beyond the call too, overall a really nice experience.
