Arrow Squid vs Calamari - any difference on the plate?

Caught anything lately? Post up how you cooked it here and if it was a success. Doesn't only have to be fish....

Arrow Squid vs Calamari - any difference on the plate?

Postby mingle » 10 Nov 2015, 19:58

Hi guys,

I caught my first arrow squid last week and when cleaning it I noticed a couple of difference from the calamari that I usually catch:

1: The tube/body flesh seemed much tougher than the calamari
2: The 'backbone' or pen was much smaller and narrower than the calamari

The mother-in-law cooked it up today (stir-fried with snow-peas) and I was expecting it to be quite rubbery, but I was quite
surprised at how tender it was - better than calamari?

Has anyone else noticed any differences, or prefer one to eat, over the other?

Cheers,

Mike.

I've caught arrows and calamari together offshore and cooked and eaten them together. In my opinion the arrows were noticeably tougher/rubberier than the calamari and everyone preferred the calamari.

Arrows are great eating if cooked well (same as calamari) but the flesh is generally thinner than that of a comparable calamari so require less cooking time. When I was in Eden many moons ago I was shown how to cook arrows by some big chef, tasted fantastic, haven't cooked one myself since :o
