I've been resisting smart phones for years but found an IP68 Sony Z3 Compact with HUGE discount and could not resist the temptation to be able to carry fishing a water resistant phone with a decent camera in case THAT fish comes along. Three days later with no fishing photos and not even a phone call:

I have been using that same phone for over 2 years now.
Not too big and performs well.
But.............I would never use a phone without one of those $6 rubber/plastic simple bump cases that you can get.
They don't cover the front glass screen, just the back and edges.
Adds a little bit of an extra edge to the slippery glass that they all have now.
And it prevents such heart ache.
Sorry for your loss Steve.

I busted 3 screens on my Sony. Now use an otter defender case with my new phone. Much better. Get a decent waterproof case for it. Don't rely on its own rating

I dropped my one week old Galaxy S8 while putting it into a waterproof case to go fishing. It cracked the screen in the top left corner. It's still serviceable so I'll keep using it until replacement screen costs come down a bit.

I now use a silicon rubber bumper (saved it from more damage) and put it into a sealed waterproof hard case when going on the water. Don't trust the water proof rating alone, while they may be rated for water immersion they will still get badly damaged by salt water. You can get active versions of some phones (eg Galaxy S7 Active) if you want something a bit more robust.

The problem wasn't butter-fingers but bumble-fingers. I was smoothing down a screen cover using the stem of reading glasses when pressing at the corner of the hole... The press was firm but not extreme. There was a weakness, so, 'unfit for purpose'. Sony is likely to have a different opinion. Hopefully, there's a pay for upgraded screen option so we're both happy.

Dont know if the current sony is the same as the Z1 in regards to once the screen cracks, even slightly, it stops working. I thought this was a safety issue with no effective "limp home" option
