With your chopping board rudder, make sure if you anchor in strong tides you lift it first or the tide to deflect it, put strain on your mechanism and cause the yak to skey at an angle to the current. It can often create so much force that you cant lift it once at anchor.

i use these pulleys for anchor trolley, had heavy use on 3 yaks for a few years without failure

Basically it's a running report on my mods, cut centre console out to make more room for tackle boxes and so on, fitted endstops inside hull outa treated pine to stop tackle boxes and alike moving outa reach, made rod holders and fitted to storage box on rear cargo area, made rod holders to fit in scupper holes, moved star mounts for rod holders (already stated)made light for early morning/night fishing, found issues, attached solar low watt light (not waterproof ) so have both, wanting to move battery to permanen location at back of seat (need advice)hmmm think i have it all covered now lol

No sure I would be wanting cut any hatches there as its too narrow and even if you could manage to squeeze one in it may affect stiffening of bulkhead

Good point but coukd add stiffners in to take the extra strain, however housing would take care of most of that issue

If you just want to pass a cable from inside the kayak to outside, I've found that these cable glands from jaycar do a nice job. They have a rubber insert which squeezes down quite tightly on the cable when tightened. I don't recall seeing any leak so far.

Note I only linked to one size; they have several others.

Doing this would be preferable to cutting out a large hole for a battery to sit in.

RE rudder mods; this is a link to the mod I did for my rudder on my terrapin XL that you may find useful. The origional rudder looks much the same as yours, I made a sleeve that slips over the existing rudder and can also be removed. However the extra weight on the rudder pulley to raise it does make it harder with extra strain.

Edit: what I haven’t put in that thread is I drilled and put two stainless nut and bolts with washers through the sleeve and rudder to hold it in place

Btw, consider a red light combo with white light... I find using the red doesnt stuff your vision as much when sitting in the dark. Over to white when you hear a boat coming and red at other times. Less bugs as well.
