Garage hoist Install

Post by Reeling »

I bought myself one of these hoist kits from ebay a week or so ago:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/351118405530 ... EBIDX%3AIT

I originally planned installing straight onto the joists but it would mean that the kayak would be too low. So I ended up raising the pulley heights as much as I could with 400mm blocks and further bolting it into the steel structure:

It now sits about 2m above the ground giving me plenty of free floor space still

Well done. It looks neat. What if you shortened the loops so that the hook attached just an inch or two above the kayak. I recon you'd get another 300mm height.

Maybe move the mounting points a bit closer together to reduce chance of it sagging in the middle.Dont want a banana boat, even if it is yellow.

So you give those ebay kits the thumbs up then and up to the job?

If you can't maybe 2x aluminium pipe wrapped in carpet to help spread the load?
Live long, fish hard and hopefully catch something.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

With regards to spreading the load and shortening the distance between the two pulleys. The instructions do say that the distance between the pulleys should be 2/3 of the overall length of the kayak which it is. Well actually it's a bit closer than it should be with a span of 2.5m.

Love the banana boat reference hehe

That's won't do anything as the pulleys is at the top already

When lifting bridge pylons which were brittle, standard procedure was to suspend them from the quarter points. I.E. half the length of the pylon between the slings equally either side of the centre, leaving one quarter of the length from each sling point to the end of the pylon. In this way you have an equal load either side of both slings, ( a quarter of the load). I know a yak is not a reinforced concrete pylon, but it would seem like a good formula to start with.
