Hi guys,
Thanks for all the info. I have just got my first ever sounder.
Just wondering..
1) What type of maintenance or regular care do people do to extend the life of a sounder?
2) Does anyone have any good DIY ideas about protecting it?
I was going to cover my sounder in a giant sandwich bag.. Is that necessary??
Thanks everyone!

Mine is water proof and has survived several dunkings. the main issue seems to be protecting the plugs from corrosion.
What sort of sounder do you have?

As Ian said, what make/model sounder, where are you mounting the transducer and how are you powering it/locating the battery? Permanent installs have different issues to temporary and in-hull transducers different to side or scupper.
Main issues will be with keeping the terminals and especially the power cord free of corrosion. What and how will vary a bit between sounder makes and models.

It can be hard to see the screen when you're out in the blazing sun. This gives some shade and also protects the back from spray but don't rely on that to keep the plug free of salt water.

A sealed cover such a a bag etc would trap moisture and humidity inside it making the issue worse. I used to store mine in a lunch box after removing, but that made fogging and plug corrosion worse as it never fully dried out.
As others have said it is the positive pin in the power cord that is most vulnerable. If the head unit leaks thats just too bad as a roll in the surf is going to drench it whatever happens

Thx heaps for replies guys.
The sounder is an lowrance elite 5 ti
It will be mounted on a chopping board console. I have added some softening pads to protect the scupper.
The battery will be in a battery box under the console. (not in hull).
The wires will come out to a swing arm transducer.
What's the best way to protect the wires etc? Haven't done any wiring yet

Wiring does'nt need protection apart from zip tieing so it does'nt get caught
