Does anything stop the tube swivelling in the recess?

Angelo those rod holders should have a gimbal pin in the bottom. If you cut a notch into the PVC pipe, that will stop the rod holder from swivelling.

Query was more about pvc twisting in recess Oein rather than holder on pvc.

There is also an easy way of making cheap custom extensions for those holders if you ever need to

Yep that's what I thought you meant, Viking flushmounts have gimbal pins in the bottom, essentially a raised ridge across the diameter. Corresponding notches cut in the PVC pipe to allow the gimbal pin in would stop the PVC pipe from rotating in the flush mount after a strike.

I can't image it would be too hard to convert some of the new chiko roll holders into rod holders.
