Striker 5 install (GEL mount) pics added

Post by Franko »

Saved some vouchers waited for a special and BOOM Frank has upgraded to a Garmin striker 5 GPS/CV. My old 300ç has been amazing and installed into 3 yaks now but I found I desired a unit with GPS. I also decided to wet mount the transducer under the seat first time using this method so will be interesting to see how it performs.

I ran the transducer in the oasis the same way Frank though I cut the bottom out of the plastic container before it was marine gooped in, it worked great just remember to top up the water when needed.

You can use ultrasound gel in place of water and not have to worry about it spilling/leaking.

I've got the same one and the reasons I went for it were because of the inbuilt GPS (no card slot to let in water) and that fact it is a 5 inch unit with only a .4a current draw.
I'm running mine on a 4ah SLA with no issues.

Re: Striker 5 install (GEL Mount) updated

UPDATE: After my first wet mount trial failed due to the sellys all clear not going off.I decided to investigate another method and sealing the transducer box with standard silicone and using a "GEL" instead of water. The idea had been suggested by Eoin (seasherpa) in a post stating Ultrasound gel would work. After a lot of google browsing, I read that a home made conductive gel can be made easily. This requires water, salt and a thickening agent. There were two agents suggested gelatine and guam gum I have chosen gelatin as it was easily found at the supermarket, guam gum can be bought from health food shops. It took several attempts to get a consistency I was happy with so that the transducer would sit in the gel without breaking apart. My concern was not having a clear screen but as seen in the pictures below it has worked very well.
My recipe for this gel is as follows:
10 grams of clear gelatin.
2 table spoons of table salt.
500 ml of water.
that easy and now I will never have to top it up with water the pictures were taken in the Maribyrnong river today, I am hoping to figure the temp offset to set the striker closer to actual.

I am very happy with the striker5 and its functions, if I fished more estuaries I would have bought the striker7 with side view. I fish bays more so this unit will do exactly what I require, hours of sounding around hoping to see the arch and then hearing the sweet sound of line being ripped off the spool.

Great result Frank
I reckon those units are one of the best value combos kicking around at the moment, I just installed another one for a customer on the weekend.
