Getting a PA14 Fishing Ready Part 1

Post by Hvalross »

It has taken a fair bit of experimenting to get my yak to this point. It has been worth it because now its comfortable and easy to use.

NOTE you can now click on the image and see them at the new larger size, I have kept it just below the limit for one and about half the new limit for the rest.

Aims

-Set up main storage in my garage so that it is easy to pack and go.
-Make it easy to set up the yak for the different types of fishing I do
-Estuary
-Fresh water
-Saltwater
-Make it easier to pack the yak for transport to and from a days fishing and a bit harder to leave things behind
-Lay out the accessories on the yak so it is easy and uncluttered to work the way I fish.
-Tow the yak safely.

Gear storage in the garage/shed is very much a personal thing, I needed help so I used see through plastic bins with labels, ESTUARY,FRESHWATER,SALTWATER, AND EVERY TRIP.

Many yakkers opt for DIY, I went with Hobie accessories, its a bit more expensive, but I don't smoke or drink so I save that up and fund my projects that way.

Towing and Storage

Towing with or without a cover is another personal choice. I keep my yak covered and found after a near miss that there is a right way to do it a many more wrong ones...

Strapping this way stops my yak from slipping forward or back even if, on a long trip there is minor loosening in the straps.

Laying out the accessories for easy access

It seems to take me for ever to load the yak at home, then longer still at the fishing location. Frustration was the driver for me to find a better way of setting up a bit smarter, The 2015 PA's have H-rail and fittings as the following images will show most of the set up simply involves turning the H-Rail fittings from internal stowage to USER position. I don't like disconnecting my sounder, the pins get dirty and wear easily,so I leave it connected. Before I put it in a bag as shown I simply let it rest on the deck....till I damage a rod and wore a hole in a cover. Now its safe and transports safely.
